NEW HOTEL
The Newman in London
Fitzrovia is a district in London, near the West End. Its eastern part is in the Borough of Camden, the western part is in the City of Westminster. It has been home to writers such as George Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf and Arthur Rimbaud. The name was coined by Tom Driberg in the 1930s, and is thought to come from The Fitzroy Tavern or Fitzroy Square, both in the east of Fitzrovia.
Just an interesting piece of trivia, the name Fitzroy is Norman French for “son of the king.” And it’s the family name of the Dukes of Grafton — the 1st Duke of Grafton, Henry Fitzroy, was the illegitimate son of Charles II.

Anyway, back to today! In Fitzrovia you will find The Newman opening February 1st. It’s on Newman Street — hence the nice if not overly imaginative name — and close to Covent Garden, Soho, Mayfair and Regent’s Park. In other words as centrally located as the term could ever apply.
This is the first hotel from a new international hospitality management company, Kinsfolk & Co. It has 81 Art Deco-inspired guest rooms, suites and apartments, designed, appropriately, for comfort. Some apartments have private balconies. The rooftop floor can be booked as a private four-bedroom suite with a terrace. As evident in the rooms and suites décor, in fact the whole hotel, the personality takes inspiration from local characters such as Nancy Cunard, once Fitzrovia’s bohemian queen, whose iconic bangles and polka dots subtly permeate the design narrative.

Wining and dining options are the Brasserie Angelica, open every day from 7am to 10pm, and when the weather is playing nice, you can eat on the outdoor terrace. There is a separate street entrance so it’s open to the public. The menu prioritizes seasonal British ingredients, which, honestly, a few decades ago would have been a brutal joke.
And there’s the intriguingly named The Gambit, the hotel’s bar offering expertly (it is hoped) created cocktails, local craft beers and a selection of small plates to nibble on. Although why people would want to nibble on crockery is beyond me. The Brits! So eccentric!
Two private event spaces and dining rooms beckon, for the big event planner in you. And yes. there’s a spa — what do you think this is, cave dwelling? Said spa claims to have taken inspiration from “Nordic simplicity” and includes an active salt therapy room, a hydrotherapy pool and a range of hot and cold “experience cabins.” You don’t have to be a hotel guest to get some of this quite desirable sounding Nordic simpleness, because there’s a day spa option for locals.
