NEW HOTEL OPENING

The White Elephant is an exciting, luxurious property in exciting, luxurious Aspen

Aspen, in the Rocky Mountains, is in a remote area of the Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains, at an elevation just under 8,000 feet, and is a home rule city and the county seat of Pitkin County in Colorado. Founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom — stop us if you know this — in the 1880s and named for the abundance of aspen trees in the area. In the mid-20th century, it became world famous as one of America’s favorite outdoor playgrounds, when Aspen Mountain was developed into a ski resort.

In downtown, the White Elephant Aspen opens June 15. The hotel’s architecture is a little different to the normal Victorian-inspired and log cabin-like buildings you see around town, injecting a bit of modernity. The interior design is warm and rich with local materials. Each room and suite has a doorknocker — right? When did you last see one of those in a hotel? — a nod to sister properties in Nantucket and Palm Beach.

There are 54 rooms, including a 730 square-foot, two-bedroom suite perfect for families (and, I guess, swingers), and the 1660 square-foot Penthouse Suite, with three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, kitchen, dining space, living room and private balcony with sweeping mountain views.

Lola 41 is the hotel’s restaurant, offering a menu of seafood with an Asian and Mediterranean flavor, great new and unique cocktail creations, and 41 Below a  private dining space.

If you do not want to eat in the hotel, Aspen has, of course, a host of excellent restaurants and has become something of a culinary hotspot. Which is a long cry from when the first jetsetters were getting there, let me tell you.

White Elephant has a long-standing partnership with BMW, so year-round you can have a courtesy car to get around town and in the winter a shuttle to and from the ski slopes. When it gets a tad warmer than it is right now, you can cool off in the outdoor pool or borrow a complimentary bicycle for a ride.

But, you know, maybe not after you’ve had some of those unique cocktails…
