The Cormorant at 55 South, Puerto Williams, Chile is in the southernmost city in the world. Or is it?
Puerto Williams in Chile was founded in 1953 and first called Puerto Luisa, but later named after John Williams Wilson, a British man who founded Fuerte Bulnes, the first settlement in the Strait of Magellan. It claims to be the southernmost city in the world. Some dispute this, because of its size and population, saying it is too small! But it is a city, a port and a naval base, and the departure and arrival point for scientific research and activity related to Antarctica, and an expedition cruise to the White Continent
In October, Silversea, the luxury cruise company with cruises to Antarctica, will open The Cormorant at 55 South, which will, for sure, be the southernmost hotel on Earth! And travelers that choose this cruise company can spend a pre and/or post-cruise night in the same comfort and service customary on the cruise.
“We wanted to make this hotel really authentic and representative of the location,” says Ingrid Staudenmeyer, Silversea’s senior director of expeditions. “The architect is locally based, and the design blends in with the environment, surrounded by trees in this very picturesque setting overlooking the Beagle Channel.” A snow-capped mountain range, the Dientes de Navarino, so named for its jagged pinnacles that resemble teeth, rises behind the hotel.
“Inside it’s very much a wood feel,” Staudenmeyer says, “with a lot of natural and earthy elements to reflect the surroundings. It’s very open, with high ceilings, and the color palette is more natural. We’re using a lot of artists from the area. As an example, they created these great lighting fixtures, and there will be a mural. From start to finish, it’s all about where we are, and what can we showcase that’s truly authentic to the location.”
The hotel has 150 rooms. All rooms are identical in size and layout but with breathtaking views; either overlooking the Beagle Channel or the forest.
The design indeed reflects the spirit of the natural wonder of Patagonia.
Wining and dining and public spaces blend Silversea style with the depthless beauty of Patagonia. Latitude 55, the restaurant, named for its location near the 55th parallel, serves Chilean flavors and traditions. Bar Sur — during the day you can get teas and snacks, at night spirits and wine — inspired by regional flavors. The Fireplace Lounge is a place to relax with signature cocktails or a glass of really good wine.
After you have arrived and seen your room, had a drink and maybe a meal, go to The Uncharted, the hotel’s shop and buy a keepsake. Most are made by local Chilean artists.
Caveat: the hotel can only be booked if you are taking Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise, the prices of which range from $14,000 to over $21,00 USD, depending on suite choice, itinerary length, and specific ship and include the hotel and all it has to offer.
